A private, landscape-designer-led walk through gardens around Nanzen-ji.
Why we chose it
A reason to go.
Andrew William’s landscape-architecture background and Kyoto garden training support a specific design-led perspective. Comparing neighboring gardens gives time to consider placement and composition instead of collecting unrelated temple stops.
The experience
What you’ll do.
Meet outside Keage Station Exit 1.
Walk the advertised three-garden circuit with interpretation of design and associated Buddhist ideas, ending near Nanzen-ji.
A little context
More to take in.
A garden is experienced from particular viewpoints and along particular paths. Explanation can help you recognise those choices while still leaving room for your own response.
Our recommendation
Choose the right experience.
What to choose
Choose the private 3½-hour Konchi-in, Tenjuan and Nanzen-ji garden walk.
Who it suits
Garden enthusiasts, designers and travelers who enjoy looking closely and asking questions.
When to choose something else
Choose NORU for broader neighborhood coverage, or a meditation session if your main goal is personal practice.
Nanzen-ji’s gardens turn composition into meaning. A landscape designer can connect the physical arrangement with the ideas behind it.

A bike links residential lanes and religious sites that are awkward to combine on foot. The worthwhile part is the guide-led connection between neighborhoods, rather than a promise of empty famous temples.
The guide provides navigation through wooded approaches and connects small religious sites to the better-known shrine. It earns its fee for route-finding and interpretation, since ordinary shrine entry itself is free.
The rickshaw section reduces walking and gives your party a guide who can stop for photographs. The bamboo route includes a reserved rickshaw path, giving a different perspective from the main pedestrian lane.
